All ninjas require the use of accessories in combat or completing missions. Below you can find some information about the different types of accessories found in the series.

Standard Ninja Apparel
Body Armor - The most common body armor consists of a small sheet of horizontal metal plates across the chest and back. They are typically worn under a ninja's clothing, however, it is not worn by all ninjas.

Forehead Protector - This is a band of cloth with a metal plate in the middle worn by almost all ninjas. Given to the ninja upon completion of the Ninja Academy, is it proof of a person's status as a full fledged ninja, and is thus worn proudly and also fiercely guarded against damage. Most of the time, it is worn as a headband, but can be worn as a belt, armband, or necklace. The metal plate on the band is inscribed with a unique symbol of the ninja's home village.

Hand Guard - This is a simple metal plate attached to the ninja's gloves. It is very useful for blocking and deflecting attacks.

Hip Pouch - This is a larger pouch attached to the a ninja's belt area and positioned for easy access, usually the over the rear left hip. A ninja stores most of his or her equipment in this pouch. Common items include: kunai, shuriken, scrolls, trap wire, smoke/flash bombs, exploding tags, hand mirrors, and if you happen to be Chouji Akimichi, insane amounts of potato chips.

Kunai Holster - This small pouch strapped around the right leg, rarely on the left, is used for the storing of kunais. These holsters can also be placed in other hidden parts of the body as well.

Scrolls - A common item in the Naruto world, the scroll is used in many different ways. Normal scrolls are your average blank rolls of paper. They are useful for taking notes. Contract scrolls are used by the various animal clans to enable ninjas to summon them. Sealing scrolls are used to seal and contain things of danger to prevent them from doing any harm. Summoning scrolls are used by many ninjas to summon creatures or objects that are too difficult or too situational to carry around. These scrolls are often filled with bizarre writing and require a swipe of the summoner's blood in order to use them.

Vest - This is a protective vest worn by most ninjas. This is considered a type of uniform, but the exact color and design varies by the village. Usually a vest features a large number of pockets and pouches for storing scrolls, equipment, and other items of need.

ANBU Squad Accessories
Arm Guard - This is a larger metal plate worn along the arm(s) of ANBU members for defense.

Hand Guard - A simple metal plate attached to the a ninja's gloves; they are very useful for blocking and deflecting attacks.

Katana - A long sword strapped across the back, the katana serves as the primary weapon of for most ANBU ninjas.

Mask - This white mask is worn over the entire face all ANBU members for disguise as well as identification. No two masks are alike, but they are commonly animal shaped with different shapes and patterns drawn on them and two narrow eye holes. It is also common for the symbol of the ANBU member's village to be carved on the mask's forehead in lieu of a forehead protector.

Tattoo - This is a small black pattern worn on the left biceps of all ANBU members as proof of their membership in the ANBU.

The Akatsuki Accessories
Cloak and Hat - This is the standard dress of all Akatsuki members: a black coat covered with red clouds that goes down to the wearer's knees and a straw hat with long white threads hanging from the edges to help hide the wearers face.

Forehead Protector - Each Akatsuki member still wears the forehead protector of their old village except a long horizontal scratch is cut through the village symbol.

Rings - Each member of the Akatsuki wears a ring with a different kanji symbol on it. Each is a symbol of one of the nine mythical beasts of Japanese mythology or the four Kyoto gods. It is thought that a member's particular kanji also represents some type of code-name. There are 10 rings in all and if an Akatsuki member dies, his or her ring is recovered and given to whoever takes his or her place. Each member also wears his or her ring on a different finger than any of the other members. Thus far, the symbols from 7 of the 10 rings are known.

Unique Accessories
Deidara's Clay Pouch - This pouch is where Deidara stores his clay. This pouch is essential because most of Deidara's fighting comes from the use of clay figures created from his palms, which have mouthes on them.

Gaara's Gourd - Gaara of the Desert always wears this large tan gourd strapped across his back. It contains a large amount of sand, which serves as his one and only weapon in battle. The sand is mixed with the blood of the many people he's killed and will emerge to shield Gaara from harm, even if Gaara himself does not command it to do so. It is later revealed the gourd itself is also made of sand allowing Gaara to draw sand from within the gourd while it appears closed for a sneak attack. The gourd can also dissolve completely and be used to increase Gaara's sand supply.

Hidan's Necklace - Hidan is part of an Evil Gold cult. Because of this, he wears a beaded necklace with a charm that has the cult's symbol. He follows all of the strict rules of the cult, including praying before a battle and performing a bloody ritual after.

Hokage Necklace - Made from a rare expensive ore, this necklace belonged to the First Hokage. He passed it on to his granddaughter Tsunade. Tsunade then gave it to her brother on his twelfth birthday, but he died the next day. Tsunade then gave it to her boyfriend who also died soon after. Both men dreamed of becoming Hokage but the necklace seemed to carry bad luck. When Naruto drove himself to fight with Tsunade, she saw he could fulfill his dream to become Hokage one day. For that reason she felt the necklace had found someone deserving so she gave it to him as a present.

Rock Lee's Ankle Weights - Taijutsu expert Rock Lee always wears these weights under his leg-warmers. They are used both to work his muscles constantly and to give him a trump card in the heat of battle. He is only allowed to remove them when protecting people important to him or in life and death situations. When removed, his already impressive speed increases exponentially. Each weight is said to have weighed 50 pounds during the Chunnin Exam, but Lee has most likely increased the weight since then.

Sakura's Gloves - These gloves are worn by Sakura when she uses her fists for powerful punches. The gloves help protect her hand and concentrate her punches, which carry great strength now that she has trained with Tsunade.

Ten Ten's Weapon Scrolls - This is a typical summoning-type scroll but with a bit of a twist. These scrolls contain various symbols, and each symbol corresponds to some type of ninja weapon and by touching the symbol the weapon appears in her hand. This allows Ten Ten access to a large arsenal of weapons, and considering that weapon usage is her forte, they make Ten Ten a dangerous opponent. In the Chunnin Exam her scrolls only summon projectile type weapons, like various knives and shuriken, and since Ten-Ten never misses with throwing weapons, she uses them to rain metal death on her opponents. After that time however she upgrades them to be able to summon other ninja weapons like Bo staffs and swords, but these scrolls require a bit of blood instead of just a touch like a regular summoning technique.
